TORONTO, ONTARIO and NEW YORK, – December 2, 2019 – Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc. (NYSE:BR), a global Fintech leader and part of the S&P 500® Index, has hosted the first virtual shareholder meeting (VSM) for both registered and beneficial shareholders in Canada for Brookfield Property Partners, L.P. While VSM adoption has increased sharply over the past decade since Broadridge first introduced this new technology solution, it is new to Canada. This is the fifth VSM to take place in Canada, and the first for Brookfield, whose meeting took place on October 24.
The key benefit of VSMs is that they enable company securityholder meetings to be more accessible, making it much easier for securityholders and management to view and participate in a meeting and reduce the associated costs for investors and the company, all with secure technology. Since 2009, Broadridge has hosted over 1,000 virtual shareholder meetings in the U.S.
Broadridge hosted the first virtual-only meeting in Canada for registered and beneficial shareholders to vote at the meeting and is the only service provider that can validate beneficial shareholders and allow their votes to be cast in real time. An appointee (a person authorized to attend a meeting on behalf of a securityholder) is validated at the meeting and can vote in accordance with the direction of the underlying investor, or with full discretion.
“We are excited to extend our proven technology to Canada and to provide new ways to engage with shareholders,” said Patricia Rosch, president of Investor Communication Solutions, International, at Broadridge. “Companies holding a VSM have shown increased shareholder participation at their securityholder meetings. No longer does a securityholder have to travel distances or incur costs to hear from management or ask a question, thanks to virtual meetings.”
