Transforming Capital Markets with AI/ML and RPA

Bulk transfer initiative

I am looking forward to participating in a partner workshop panel at SIFMA’s Operations Conference & Exhibition this year in Phoenix on May 8th. The partner workship is organized by Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc. and entitled From Bots to Products: Transforming Capital Markets with Artificial Intelligence. It's going to be exciting as this is a hot topic and one where there are actual deployments being done and investments in technology underway.

At Celent, we have been talking a lot recently about the transformation of capital markets and the deployment of emerging technologies to drive automation and efficiency, such as robotic process automation (RPA), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning. I regularly speak to a number of institutions (investment banks, exchanges and marketplaces, custodians, etc) on their use of AI/ML/RPA across their organizations. This is a hot area and one where opportunities and challenges abound.

Many of these firms are using RPA to drive efficiency through automation in the back and middle office, rather than the more cutting-edge AI/ML, but the use cases and investigations are very active and growing. Some of the more innovative investment banks are also deploying AI/ML in their operations, and even touching the front office.

A SIFMA Ops, I will bring some examples with me to the panel discussion on use cases and deployments of AI/ML/RPA across capital markets. Since I am briefed by the providers of AI/ML/RPA in capital markets, I will include a variety of examples. My goal will be to level set the audience on where AI+ML+RPA is actually being used and tested today in capital markets.

AI/ML and RPA are making significant inroads in post-trade operations, automating many manual processes. We see several use cases emerging in risk and compliance, reconciliation and exception management, and erroneous order management. Another interesting area where AI/ML is being deployed today is in market surveillance, where firms are trying to leverage advances in data, analytics, machine learning and AI to stop bad behaviors before they occur.

At a high level, many describe AI/ML/RPA as the evolution of intelligent automation, going well beyond RPA and adding machine learning, with automation delivering more value as it adapts. It will be interesting to see how Broadridge and Société Générale are testing and deploying these technologies across their organizations and clients, where they see the biggest opportunities and challenges, and how they and others in the audience are looking at regulatory and compliance issues. I hope you will join me in attending SIFMA Ops in Phoenix, especially if you are on the west coast.
