U.S. Investor Study 2024

Investor insights you need to know now
Broadridge’s Data Center of Excellence conducted a Study analyzing share ownership data from tens of millions of retail investors to gain insights into holdings invested through financial intermediaries. The Study included analysis of various types of funds and U.S. equities held in taxable accounts and IRAs from 2018 to 2023.

Explore the data from 11 demographic variables, which are consistently presented throughout the Study, such as wealth, generation, product – and more

The democratization of investing

Millennial growth epitomizes the democratization of investing. They now represent 22% of investors and have asset share that has doubled to 6% since 2018.

Women investors

Female investors have slightly higher median assets compared to males, possibly due to their higher median age, despite similar portfolio risk levels between the genders.

Irreversible decline for mutual funds

In 2023, mutual fund asset share dropped below equity assets within individual investors’ portfolios for the first time.

Levels of education may vary

The number of investors without college or advanced degrees now account for more than 50% of the total number of investors.

What we learned can be used as a valuable tool providing insight into the holdings of U.S. retail investors.
