OVERVIEW

For wealth management firms, even basic questions such as who holds which assets, in what funds, for how long, and toward which objectives, can be surprisingly difficult to answer accurately and consistently.

That challenge is magnified across networks of independent advisors who are often outsourcing functions to multiple different third-party partners:

  • Trading: Vendor 1
  • Clearing and settlement: Vendor 2
  • Custody: Vendor 3
  • Asset management: Vendor 4

With each vendor using its own recordkeeping and data management systems, achieving a unified view of client assets becomes nearly impossible.

By partnering with Broadridge, one of the industry’s largest networks of independent advisors and institutions consolidated account-level data into a single, firm‑wide, real‑time source of truth.

CHALLENGE

Data management gets complicated

The last decade of industry consolidation, rapid-fire technology adoption, and explosive growth in advised assets has made data management a critical priority for wealth firms. Everything from regulatory reporting to routine account management requires firms to be able to see a real-time snapshot of account-level data. For many firms, however, that critical information lives in a tangled web of third-party datasets, individual software applications, and disconnected operational silos.

This data fragmentation issue was particularly acute for a Broadridge client that manages one of the world’s largest networks of independent advisors and advisory firms. Having grown rapidly through acquisition, the firm was managing a network of more than 12,000 independent advisors and facing several data reconciliation challenges:

  • Each advisory firm was using different third-party partners
  • Account-level data was housed and managed in dozens of different ways
  • Reconciling the firm’s positions to answer the most basic questions about asset class exposure, client risk profile, or long-term performance was a labor-intensive exercise
SOLUTION

The golden record

The client knew it needed to get a handle on its account-level data. Regulatory reporting requirements like U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Rule 17a-4, which outlines strict requirements for how registered broker-dealers must store, retain, index, and provide access to business records, demanded a clearer view into its firm-wide data. They needed a partner who could not only deliver the technology necessary to harness these disparate pieces of information; they needed experts who could do the following:

  • Understand the intricacies of the wealth management workflow
  • Break down barriers to build bridges between essential datasets

The solution came through a partnership with Broadridge to deploy our Wealth Aggregation & Insights solution to harness their disparate data and transform it into actionable insights, with the following steps:

  • Take a detailed inventory of the dozens of different data sources the firm was using across its vast network of advisors and guide them on the unique runbooks for authorizing the release of the data
  • Make that data accessible within our proprietary hosted data warehouse to help normalize everything in standard tables
  • Develop a firm-wide, single source of data drawing on Broadridge’s 4500+ product company data sources representing all asset types
  • Layer in analytics capabilities and automated reporting tools that transformed this raw data into strategic business intelligence for our client and its network of advisors
BENEFITS

A future-ready data foundation

This complex data reconciliation challenge was not unique to this one client. Across the financial services industry, firms are wrestling with clunky data integrations and inconsistent processes that slow things down and create unnecessary confusion. In fact, according to the Broadridge 2025 Digital Transformation & Next-Gen Technology Study, two of the top items on the wish lists of financial services technology and operations leaders were:

  • A single platform to be used across regions, asset classes and functions
  • A single source of data that can be leveraged firm-wide

The single, streamlined account dataset we developed for this client served a critical and immediate need to support real-time regulatory reporting and firm-wide transparency. However, it also created a foundation for future product and technology development by making essential client and portfolio-level information available to power new analytics capabilities and fuel client management and prospecting strategies.

“Firm-wide data aggregation initiatives like this scare a lot of firms because they require a systematic overhaul to all the ad hoc software patches and make-shift data mapping tools they’ve been cobbling together for years to power different applications and inform their compliance and regulatory reporting efforts. By working closely with our clients and giving them the ability to fine-tune each step in the process, we were able to create the Holy Grail of modern wealth management – a single, golden record of account-level data that can be used to address today’s needs and power tomorrow’s innovations.”
