FundFlash: June 2016

FundFlash is a concise, two-minute read of the month’s key industry developments for busy fund professionals. This edition is a snapshot of the European trends in June 2016.

The Brexit vote had been looming for months but, with the polls too close to call, sharp market
moves one way or the other were inevitable. Fund holdings were subject to their third cull of the
year, the €20bn of total net redemptions proving worse than February’s but not as bad as
January’s. There was no such ‘restraint’ to be found in equities – outflows of €23bn were the
European industry’s most painful since August 2011 and year-to-date net equity flows currently
stand at a gloomy -€57bn. Unsurprisingly, equity sectors were almost nowhere to be seen
among June’s bestsellers, and core offerings such as Europe, North America and Japan all
languished at the bottom of the heap.
